The great thing is that regardless of the settings or occasions, what I love most about my job never changes: when my subjects see their images, they feel FAMOUS, BIGGER than LIFE… and doesn’t everyone deserve to feel that once in a while?
We live in a digital world where often the first glimpse potential clients or employers have of us is online. Headshots have a lot of jobs to do in a fraction of time. They have to convey personality and professionalism. They have to be intriguing enough to stop the viewer’s scroll and invite them to look further into WHO the person behind the photo actually is.
Let me tell you what we do to give our clients headshots they love.
Look, I get it. Phone cameras have come a long way, baby. It’s tempting to snap a picture and throw on a filter… but there is SO MUCH more to the art of headshot photography. It’s a process based on education and communication. First we consult with every individual so that we can understand the message they are trying to convey to their audience, and help them plan their outfit choices accordingly. We then coach our clients through their posing, and light their headshots all to achieve flattering results straight out of camera. But we don’t stop there. We also only deliver images that have been through premium retouching. While we never change the essence of who our clients are, and our hand edits are at the same time subtle and detailed.
While we are here to guide you on what to wear and what to do to look your best in your professional headshots, there are a few things you can do to make sure you are at your best on shoot day.
Our body restores and heals during sleep, so good sleep habits can have a cumulative positive effect on our appearance, including our hair and skin. For adults, 7-9 hours a night is recommended. Even one restless night can cause red and swollen eyes, and dark circles; or ashen skin with fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth.
Staying hydrated can give the opposite effect, helping with elasticity, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and giving the skin a more “radiant glow.”
Interestingly enough, staying hydrated is associated with improved sleep quality, and the benefits of proper rest on our appearance are well documented.
Don’t take my word for it though. I’m a photographer, not a doctor. Click on the links for more information about the science.
Consider hiring a professional hair and makeup artist. They know that the lens and the lights act as layers that can play down your best features, and they know what to apply to maximize what you want highlighted while minimizing what you want to hide in a classic, timeless style. REMEMBER, makeup is NOT just for the ladies. Many makeup artists offer male grooming to even out skin tones, or hide the occasional breakout. TV and big screen celebrities all utilize the tool.
If you choose an artist you’ve never worked with before, consider a trial run before, maybe on the day you go in for your haircut, and eyebrow grooming… those are all things you want to do before your session, but make your appointment about a week before you’re scheduled to shoot. OH! And keep from making any drastic changes until after your session date.
Don’t have an idea where to find a hair and makeup artist? We have trusted professionals we work with frequently and will connect you with them and even set up the appointment date!
We will cover this in your pre-shoot consultation. There is A LOT that goes into choosing just the right outfits that depend on you, your likes, your skin tones, your profession… but here are a few universal things to keep in mind:
There is a lot to think about and consider when making professional headshots, but it is our job to take on the work for you, and to guide you through the process so that you will come away with images that represent who you are on your best day… and make that next client or employer want to know more about you!
When you’re ready to update your profile, shoot us a message, and we will take good care of you!
