The great thing is that regardless of the settings or occasions, what I love most about my job never changes: when my subjects see their images, they feel FAMOUS, BIGGER than LIFE… and doesn’t everyone deserve to feel that once in a while?
I made the decision a year ago to serve my clients by offering heirloom quality prints along with digital images. There are many good ways to provide for clients, but for me, it was the best service I could offer them.
My images are printed on a gorgeous matte paper, mounted on styrene. They are an investment, but it is an investment I consider worth making.
These are the top five reasons why I ask my clients to let me print their pictures:
1. Technology Changes:
We live in a digital age. It’s how we communicate. It is how we share our lives. Digital images are as important to me as they are to my clients, and that is why I include them and a session gallery slideshow in every collection I sell.
Heck, I value digitals so much that every session comes with a phone app where my clients can share their images from their smartphones.
But technology changes. And no one ever handed down a USB drive from generation to generation.
Remember when we put music on cassettes? Or movies on VHS tapes? Apple has already phased out disk drives from their laptops.
There is no guarantee that future computers will have USB ports.
Remember “My Space,” the first “Facebook?”
What will happen to all of our pictures if the Facebook or Instagram disappears?
With prints, we don’t have to worry about our systems becoming obsolete. With prints, our descendants will be able to enjoy “how we were then” for generations.
2. Technology Fails
Disks get scratched. Hard drives crash. Files become corrupted.
A corrupted file cannot be uncorrupted.
But a good quality print can be photographed again… which brings me to my next point.
3. My Prints Have a Lifetime Guarantee
One of my favorite things to do is to sit down and look at old photo albums. But when I look back at old pictures of my parents and grandparents, I see that colors have faded, and some pictures are barely visible on the paper. Other prints are bent, or torn.
All prints are not created equally.
I know my clients are investing in their sessions, and in my products. My photos, printed by professional printing labs, are guaranteed for life. HOW these labs print to keep the color true for 200 years is above my pay grade, but at least we know our children, and our children’s children, will be able to enjoy these treasures too.
Now, I can’t guarantee prints that have been damaged by something other than the passage of time, but I do take steps to increase their durability and improve quality.
For that, I mount my prints on styrene rather than offer them on regular photo paper. Styrene mounts look beautiful on display, and are about 2 mm thick. They can still be framed, with or without glass. The styrene mount gives the prints body, keeps them from warping over time, and protects from bending and tearing.
5. My Prints Are True to Color
My computer screen is calibrated with my labs, so that the colors I see while editing are the same as on the prints I get back.
That does not always happen with consumer labs.
Have you ever printed a picture and the colors looked odd, compared to what you saw on the phone or computer? I have seen it.
That won’t happen with the prints I provide.
I take pride in giving my clients a wonderful experience and beautiful images that they can’t help but want to talk about. But it is also my job to deliver high quality prints that my clients will hang on their walls and enjoy daily, not just give them a flash drive that will likely end up in a desk drawer, forgotten.
