The great thing is that regardless of the settings or occasions, what I love most about my job never changes: when my subjects see their images, they feel FAMOUS, BIGGER than LIFE… and doesn’t everyone deserve to feel that once in a while?
I love pictures. They freeze moments in time for us to look back on as the years pass us by. I am particularly fond of sports photography because I get to be a voyeur to the action, a teller of the stories and the emotions unfolding before me. But there is a challenge in shooting technically sound photographs in that genre, because I don’t get to dictate where and how the action occurs, and I am at the mercy of the location, the lighting, or the angles… all things that I have control of in portrait sessions.
Enter a trend in photography that marries what I love about shooting families and shooting sports: Lifestyle Photography.
In a lifestyle session, I enter my client’s home, and shoot them in their own environment, to capture them as they are now. It is a fantastic way to photograph children, because my families just do what they normally do, with very little direction. If the child needs to eat, I shoot the parents feeding her. If the child needs to be changed, or wants to be read to, we do that too.
It is my goal to capture the genuine parent/child interactions as they live their lives; to document their relationships in raw and real terms. I get tell the story of who they are in their current life stage, and to show them the beauty of what I see before me.
