The great thing is that regardless of the settings or occasions, what I love most about my job never changes: when my subjects see their images, they feel FAMOUS, BIGGER than LIFE… and doesn’t everyone deserve to feel that once in a while?
As a Senior Portrait Photographer, it is my job to help my customers feel at ease in front of my camera. Let’s face it… there aren’t many people out there that are comfortable staring into the eye of a lens. I have found that one of the easiest ways to do that, and at the same time document who my Seniors are at this stage of their lives, is to give them something to do that they already love doing.
Several months ago, I wrote blogs giving tips on how to prepare for a session. The guy’s version can be found here and the girl’s version can be found here. In those articles, I mentioned that props are a good thing to bring to a session, but didn’t go into detail as to how I use them.
Part of the fun when I plan a shoot with my Seniors is learning what they are passionate about, and then asking them to show me at our session. The possibilities are endless! Baseball players might toss a baseball into the air; basketball players may dribble, or shoot; artists may draw; bookworms may read; musicians may play… we are limited only by our own imaginations. And as my seniors disappear into the world they love and know best, they forget their insecurities about being photographed, and then the magic happens….
