As a former coach, I love creating action sports portraits that capture the essence of athletes’ hard work and glory!

The great thing is that regardless of the settings or occasions, what I love most about my job never changes: when my subjects see their images, they feel FAMOUS, BIGGER than LIFE… and doesn’t everyone deserve to feel that once in a while?
School, All Star, and Travel sports teams have an increasing social media presence. They use Instagram and other sites to announce scores and schedules, post game-day graphics, player honors, and other team news… so they need visual, attention-grabbing photos to entice their audience to stop their scroll. We have upgraded our team picture days to make sure our teams have plenty of options for quality content. Here is how we do it:
All registrations are done online… NO MORE PAPER ORDER FORMS for coaches to have to give out. Every player on the team gets to download the high resolution digital versions of every picture we take, with a print release, so not only can they share their photos online, but can print as many as they like in whatever sizes they want… and because we spend about an hour JUST on team pictures… they get a HUGE gallery with a ton of variety.
On picture day, we take a creatively posed shot of the team, with or without coaches, depending on the coach preference.
Then we might shoot a more traditional team picture before keeping the team together for candid and team photos.
But that’s not all! Because we have increased the allotted shooting time per team, we then break up and photograph different sub-groups such as position groups. managers, or classes (Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen). If we are photographing both Varsity and JV teams in a program, we will put the teams together for a program shot.
Typically, our coaches schedule their Team Media Day as a “team bonding” event. We work efficiently but don’t rush our players, and we collaborate with them to come up with photos they will be proud to display.
After we spend about an hour photographing our groups, we photograph individuals who order the individual digital package. Like with our team posing, we give our athletes a mix of traditional portraits, combined with action and buddy shots. The more individuals from the team participate, the bigger variety of individual shots they’ll get… and once we have a certain number of individuals on board, the team gets a large vinyl stadium banner to hang on location during games.
The investment from the team and the goal for individual participation depends on the team size and location.
