The great thing is that regardless of the settings or occasions, what I love most about my job never changes: when my subjects see their images, they feel FAMOUS, BIGGER than LIFE… and doesn’t everyone deserve to feel that once in a while?
As a Senior Portrait Photographer, the number one question I get is, “what do I wear for my pictures?” When I photograph families, that question seems more complicated, but the way I help my clients through the answer is the same, and it is simple.
The first thing I tell my families is to coordinate their outfit colors without being identical. Now, some of my families want a very specific look, and they all want to be the same, so they will dress in white shirts with khakis, for example. But I tend to direct my families to choose colors and styles which compliment one another rather than being identical. I enjoy drawing out the personalities of each of the people I photograph, and their identity is often shown by the clothes they choose to wear.
When a family books with me, I send them a color guide which gives them suggestions about what colors look good on every person, which colors translate well on camera with each particular skin tone, and which colors they need to limit or avoid.
When and where the session is, or what we will be doing also dictates the style and color choices of what I suggest my clients to wear.
When 2018 LPJ Senior Rep Hunter Baker decided to shoot with his cousin, Katie, we decided on a sun-filled poolside session.
We chose vivid colors which screamed summer fun and complemented both their skin tones and vibrant friendship.
If the colors were dynamic, their style was relaxed, carefree.
But every shoot is as different as the people in it.
There are too many variables to list in one blog, but one thing is for sure: I make myself available to my families to guide them through their choices, so that they don’t have to stress about what will work.
I make my experience available to them so that the portrait process is an enjoyable one.
