The great thing is that regardless of the settings or occasions, what I love most about my job never changes: when my subjects see their images, they feel FAMOUS, BIGGER than LIFE… and doesn’t everyone deserve to feel that once in a while?
As a photographer who happens to love sports and kids, when the Saffian family called on me to take pictures their oldest son in his football gear, with his brother and sister in their football jersey and cheer uniform as well, I jumped at the chance to take them to Keenan Stadium… my old stomping grounds at UNC-Chapel Hill. Not only did we get some awesome pictures in this Football themed shoot, but once we finished the traditional shots at the stadium, we moved to the track for a little game of tag-football. But with this crew, it was more like a slam-football! SO MUCH FUN!!
Landon, Selah, and Braxton are all as athletic as they are All-American. Each excels in sport in their own way. I have had the privilege of photographing Selah to document some big wins her competitive cheer teams earned last year, but this fall it was Landon’s turn.
Landon and I had a blast! He loved posing like players he looks up to, and even had a special treat! As we were shooting, the Carolina Football players started walking by on their way to the field house after practice. It just so happens that one of the kickers, Freeman Jones, is a former high school teammate of my son’s. When I saw him, I called out his name, gave him a hug, and he took some time to chat with the Saffian kiddos. I wish I had thought to take pictures of their faces!! I will have to thank Freeman next time I see him, because he sure made me look like a big deal!
Once the players left, and we snagged some shots of the three kids, we made our way to the track for our own game of football.
Let me just say, if I thought Landon was tough, Little Braxton is even TOUGHER! Big brother shows no mercy when it comes to his favorite game, but Braxton bounced back from the tackles all smiles and ready for more!
I love tradition. It is important to me, and I know it is important to the people I photograph, so I work hard to capture that for them. But there is nothing I love more than twisting tradition to bring out the chemistry and personality of my families.
And THIS family is FULL of personality and spunk.
