The great thing is that regardless of the settings or occasions, what I love most about my job never changes: when my subjects see their images, they feel FAMOUS, BIGGER than LIFE… and doesn’t everyone deserve to feel that once in a while?

February always brings that extra something—love feels louder, warmer, more intentional. With Valentine’s Day in the air, I’ve found myself reflecting on two recent couple sessions that completely filled my heart and reminded me why I do what I do. These weren’t just photo shoots. They were moments. The kind you feel in your chest long after you pack up your camera.
As a Roanoke Rapids based couple photographer, I had the honor of documenting a surprise proposal on Lake Gaston in Littleton, NC, and an intimate in-studio engagement session in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina.

Alex and McKenzie’s session was pure magic—and adrenaline. A surprise proposal always is, but this one? It was the perfect proposal.
Both fellow Tar Heels, their story already felt close to home. McKenzie is no stranger to my camera; I’ve had the honor of photographing her UNC grad photos, as well as her sister Madison’s high school portraits. And Madison is already on my spring calendar for HER 2026 college graduation photos in Chapel Hill. I LOVE this sweet family and beautiful girls.
Alex planned an intimate moment on their Lake Gaston pier—just the two of them, quiet and intentional. Their friends and family were nearby enough to see the proposal without intruding, keeping the moment private while still allowing loved ones to celebrate from a distance. The joy continued afterward, first at the lake house and later at Timber Waters Brewery in Littleton, where hugs, laughter, food, and fun filled the room.

From a photography perspective, this kind of proposal takes real planning. Alex and I had to be aligned—how he would propose, exactly where it would happen, who would be there, and what moments mattered most to capture. That preparation allowed the moment itself to feel effortless, and let me focus entirely on documenting it without intruding.
Capturing a proposal is less like a portrait session and more like shooting sports—which I love. Timing, anticipation, and adapting on the fly is everything. I had to completely turn off the interaction part of my brain so I could capture the moment naturally.
I was there… but I wasn’t.
The only words I truly caught Alex saying were his first, as McKenzie reached him on the pier:
“You’re my best friend.”
Heart. Melted. 🖤
I remember thinking, okay, turn your ears off, just shoot. And somehow I did. Being fully present while also disappearing into the background is a skill I don’t take lightly—and one that matters most during moments like this.

Then there’s Peyton—also a Tar Heel—and my son. Watching your child fall in love with the perfect for him soulmate is a whole different kind of beautiful. Harley loves him well, and he is so good to her. Their pairing is God-blessed, and their Christ-centered love is a blessing to our family.
Peyton and Harley will have their engagement session and bridals later on, but for their save-the-dates and wedding website, we wanted something intimate and meaningful. With cold winter weather doing its thing, we brought the session into the studio and kept it cozy.
We listened to Puerto Rican music as a nod to both of their Latin heritages, letting it set the rhythm and mood of the shoot. I even pulled out Michael and my wedding champagne flutes so they could sip bubbly together—simple, symbolic… so them.
This session was more directed, sure, but no less fun. Calm, connected, and full of intention.

One thing these two sessions had in common—despite being completely different—was thoughtful planning.
Every couple is different. Every story is different. And every session should reflect that.
Some couples come in knowing exactly what they want, and my job is to deliver that vision beautifully. Others have a feeling but aren’t quite sure how to bring it to life—and that’s where experience comes in. I help anticipate moments, suggest ideas you may not think of, and guide the process in a way that feels natural and stress-free.
We work as a team—but it’s my responsibility to:
Whether I’m quietly anticipating a proposal or gently directing an intimate studio session, my goal is always the same: authentic images that feel like you.

I stay shy of shooting weddings because my heart lives in the interaction—the connection, the trust, the in-between moments. These couple sessions are exactly where that magic happens.
One required me to disappear entirely.
The other invited soft direction and shared energy.
Different pace. Same love.
This Valentine’s season was a reminder that love doesn’t look just one way—and getting to witness it through my lens will always be an honor. 💘
XO, Lymarie
