The great thing is that regardless of the settings or occasions, what I love most about my job never changes: when my subjects see their images, they feel FAMOUS, BIGGER than LIFE… and doesn’t everyone deserve to feel that once in a while?
I know it has been a few weeks since I have blogged, guys. As a senior portrait photographer, the month of June is jammed with last minute sessions for upcoming graduates. For them, senior year is filled with so many things have to get done that sometimes families realize they haven’t had portraits shot until it is time to send out announcement and graduation party invites… and that is when I can step in to help! It just means that other things, like blogging, have to wait until I can get my clients their pictures.
So now I get to show you a little bit of the pride of my small hometown, the historic Roanoke Rapids High School, as I share some of my favorite cap and gown images from some of its 2017 Graduates.
My guess is that not many of its current students realize that the corner stone pictured with Kristen Jones above even exists. It documents that the “Senior Building,” which is on the National Historical Registry, was built in 1920, funded by town industrialist Samuel Patterson. It was his intention that this building would be a focal point in the community. It was then, and remains so, almost 100 years later.
I have travelled to high schools across the state, and while I know I am biased, I have not seen a building more grand than this old love of ours. There is just something magical about riding down Roanoke Avenue, and glancing down 8th Street, to be greeted by this majestic structure of brick and mortar, which houses countless memories for the students, teachers, administrators, and staff that are blessed enough to have walked her halls.
Stepping through those heavy, antique wooden doors and hearing the pitter-patter of shoes upon the hardwood floors of those halls feels a little like stepping into a time warp. At least it does now. I am not sure I fully appreciated the rich history that surrounded me during my high school days. I sure do now.
Isn’t she lovely?
Matt & I met at the end of his freshman year of high school ( I was at the end of my 8th grade year) in 2009. We dated all through high school. He graduated in 2012 and I graduated in 2013. Two years later he proposed to me on the inside steps of the senior building. A little over a month ago on our wedding day we took pictures in front of RRHS to signify how much this place means to us. We also got married at the civic center where we shared many dances and fun memories at our homecomings/proms. ? RRHS will forever be apart of us!!
I LOVEEEEE your story and your wedding pictures there! I was hoping you would share it! I wonder how many other lifetime loves had their start at RRHS?
