Prom Night is a night filled with anticipation, elegance, and the promise of unforgettable memories. I was thrilled to photograph two Proms this spring. I want to take a moment to share my enthusiasm for these special nights and the families who let me share it with them, as I show you the beautiful prom pictures we made.

Capturing the Essence of Prom

Prom night is more than just a formal dance; it’s a celebration of friendship and youth. Together with our teens and families, we created prom pictures that reflected the beauty and excitement of prom night, preserving memories that they’ll cherish for years to come.

Preparing for Prom Night Pictures

Leading up to prom night, I took time time to think about the kind of photos our teens might envision. I figure they will take candid pictures of with their phones, so my goal is to give them timeless, classic portraits. BUT making photos is a collaboration, and as I guide them through posing. I look at their body language and listen to their preferences to create images that truly reflect their style and personality… but more about that later.

Choosing the Perfect Location

Prom venues are often beautifully decorated and provide a stunning backdrop for photos. This year we had the privilege to cover both Halifax Academy and Roanoke Rapids’ proms during the events, but we partnered with the wonderful and warm people at Weldon Mills Distillery before the RRHS Prom for individual pre-prom minis.

I can’t say enough good things about the staff at Weldon Mills. They graciously opened up their gorgeous venue with walls of exposed brick and hard wood floors. They provided friendly hospitality to us and our families. The Roanoke Valley is blessed to have businesses that anchor themselves in service to our community. Those of you over 21… if you haven’t visited them, you should!

Posing with Confidence

I understand that posing for photos can feel a bit intimidating, especially if you’re not used to being in front of the camera. I tell my clients to rest assured, I’ll offer gentle direction on posing, expression, and body language to help them feel confident and comfortable. Whether they’re striking a dramatic pose or sharing a candid moment with friends, my goal is to capture their natural beauty and genuine emotions.

Embracing Spontaneity

While posed portraits are important, some of the most memorable moments happen spontaneously so sometimes the directions I give seem wild and silly… that’s on purpose. Whether it’s a spontaneous burst of laughter, a playful dance move, or a heartfelt embrace, when you shoot with me, don’t be afraid to let loose and embrace the moment. These candid shots often capture the true essence of prom night—the excitement, the energy, and the sense of camaraderie among friends.

Prom Pictures Preserve Memories

My goal is that after the prom night excitement has subsided and the last dance has been danced, my families will have a collection of beautiful photos to treasure forever. I’ll carefully curate and edit the images, ensuring that each one tells a story and evokes the emotions of the moment. Whether they choose to display them in a cherished album, share them on social media, or frame them on their walls, these photos will serve as a timeless reminder of the incredible night they shared with friends and loved ones.
