The great thing is that regardless of the settings or occasions, what I love most about my job never changes: when my subjects see their images, they feel FAMOUS, BIGGER than LIFE… and doesn’t everyone deserve to feel that once in a while?
Is it weird for me to write a blog about a blog I wrote? Well, today I checked off a BIG item on my business bucket list. A piece I wrote about one of the most inspirational sessions I have ever photographed was published, and I want to share the epiphany I had in that session, and its message of communicating positivity, with the world!
When Kristy’s mom contacted me about shooting her senior pictures, she told me that Kristy is shy, and was nervous about being in front of the camera. The blog is about how I realized what an opportunity I have as a photographer to empower my clients, and to help them to see their unique value.
What I didn’t write about there, was that Kristy actually did the same for ME. Let me explain.
Her exquisite beauty is so obvious to me, and to anyone who comes across her in person or who sees her images. Her self-doubt was self-inflicted, but she trusted me to help her step outside her comfort zone… to marvelous results. I mean, just LOOK at her!
But just today she sent me a message, thanking me for “instilling the idea in me that I am beautiful.”
She didn’t even realize before she stepped out of her comfort zone how remarkable she is.
I told myself after her shoot, “If Kristy can put herself out there, and take a risk despite questioning herself, so can I.”
So I took the chance and submitted her session.
The next morning, the publisher of Ever Illuminated, Dawn Attenbery, emailed me to tell me that she loved the session and that she would be thrilled to publish it. You can read it by clicking the link.
In a world filled with so many masters of photography, I wasn’t sure that my work was worthy of comparison.
Kristy inspired me to go out on a limb. She gave me courage.
So much so that I also entered this image of LPJ Senior Model Taylor Phelps into a photo contest on View Bug, a popular site for photographers to share their work. I learned today that it ranked higher than 51,809 images to place in the Top 20 of the contest.
So, I say to you, yes YOU: Whatever you have been thinking of doing but are hesitating about, DO IT.
You ARE good enough.
You SHOULD take the chance.
The results may not be immediate, but the lessons will be worth it.
And no one ever went anywhere just sitting in place.
